Combined Counties League Division One Review: 18th March 2017

Over the weekend, only one match was postponed: Worcester Park vs. Bagshot.

Redhill reclaimed second place in the CCLD1, defeating Ash United 3-2. Ashley Snadden and Kieran Campbell scored two goals to give Redhill the lead, but Ash pulled a goal back before equalising. The Lobsters suffered an injury during the game, Luke Jones replacing left-back Jason Stripp ten minutes into the second half. Despite the injury, Redhill grabbed three points as Campbell completed a brace.

After the match, Gavin Gordon- the Redhill manager- stated:

“I thought we just about did enough in the end. After a good first twenty minutes, where we seemed to have picked up our performance from Tuesday’s game against Cobham, there was good pressing around the park with some good link up play. We deservedly went 2-0 up.”

He continued:

“We seem to relax and switch off at times- they capitalised on those opportunities. We created some good chances and eventually took one, which we couldn’t do last Saturday. I thought that Ash United worked really hard and will be looking to progress to the cup final when we meet next week, so it will be a difficult and interesting game at the Kiln Brow on Saturday. It is a challenge which we are looking forward to.”

Top of the table Banstead Athletic also won 3-2, beating seventeenth placed Cove and creating a ten point gap between the side and Redhill. However, the Lobsters have a game in hand.

Chessington & Hook United sit in third and are one point behind Redhill, taking a 2-1 victory against Balham on Saturday. Statistically, Chessington were the dominant team- the side took a total of twenty two shots, whereas Balham took eight. Neither team received any yellow or red cards and each side were only caught offside twice.

Dorking defeated Farleigh Rovers 3-2 in a thrilling encounter, despite playing with ten men for the final quarter of an hour. In the first half, Ryan Lunn received a ball from Louie Stanton-Cockle, giving Dorking the lead with a clever lob over the keeper. A free kick in the sixth minute ensued an equaliser, but Dorking reclaimed the lead approximately fifteen minutes prior to half time. Will Conroy’s shot connected with the crossbar, Steve Harcombe heading the rebound into the net. A few minutes into the second half, Jimmy Brazil extended Dorking’s lead to 3-1.

In the 75th minute, Matt Finn was controversially given a red card following a challenge. Subsequently, Farleigh were able to pull a goal back, but the side were unable to find an equaliser.

Elsewhere in the Combined Counties League Division One, Frimley Green drew 0-0 with AC London. Likewise, the outcome of Staines Lammas vs. Eversley & California was a goalless draw.

South Park Reserves are fourteenth in the table, following a 1-1 draw against Cobham.

Top of the table Banstead Athletic thrashed South Park Reserves 4-1, Martin Smith scoring a brace. Accumulating sixty six points this season, the side are eleven points ahead of second placed Chessington & Hook United, who, in spite of their position, lost 1-0 to Farleigh Rovers. Bagshot‘s 1-0 victory against Redhill ended the Lobsters’ sixteen game unbeaten run in the league and enabled the side to climb to third, Redhill slipping from second to fourth.

Redhill manager, Gavin Gordon comments:

“We were disappointed to with our approach and application towards, in particular the first half. We were out-worked by a good Bagshot team, who on the day I felt had more hunger than us. We now will regroup and focus on the next game [vs Cobham], where we can look to get back to winning ways as we have a lot to play for”

AC London defeated Cobham 2-0, the former sitting in sixth position. Meanwhile, Cobham are currently in eleventh- two points adrift of the top ten. Cove, who are in the penultimate position of the table, won their third match of season as they defeated Frimley Green 3-0.

Another 3-0 victory included Staines Lammas‘ win over Dorking. Consequently, Staines are tenth in the Combined Counties League Division One and Dorking are fifteenth. John Nunn scored the opener on the half hour mark, Tim Hayden adding a second goal five minutes prior to half time. In the second half, Dorking started to commit more players to the attack- which proved to be costly, as Staines scored their third and final goal on the counter attack.

Elsewhere in the Combined Counties League, Sheerwater suffered a 2-1 defeat to Eversley & California, whilst Worcester Park defeated Ash United 3-0.

Combined Counties League Division One Review: 4th March 2017

By Dara Wilson.

A week of appalling weather ensued several postponed fixtures, including Redhill‘s trip to Epsom Athletic on Wednesday night. The Lobsters were also unable to play Cove on Saturday afternoon. Likewise, AC London vs. Sheerwater, Chessington & Hook United vs. Worcester Park, Eversley & California vs. Farleigh Rovers and South Park Reserves vs. Cove were all postponed.

The biggest scoreline of the weekend was Ash United‘s 5-1 thrashing over bottom of the table Epsom Athletic. The former took their first victory in 2017, losing five of their last six games. Whilst Ash United have ended their winless run, Epsom are without a win since the 8th October 2016, when they defeated Cove 2-1. The side have conceded thirty one goals in their last five games, conceding eight goals in two matches and five goals in three.

Another goal festival took place at Dorking on Saturday afternoon, as Bagshot defeated the Chicks 4-2. Charlie Gordon took an early lead for the visitors, but Dorking equalised after three minutes through Paul Gough, firing the ball into the far corner. At half time, the score was 1-1, but Dorking added another goal just ten minutes into the second half. Louie Stanton Cockle capitalised on a loose ball, scoring for the Chicks.

The game took another rapid turn as Jordan Merriman equalised on the hour mark, placing  a superb shot into the far corner. However, the goalscorer lashed out later in the match, receiving a red card as a result. Nevertheless, Bagshot took a 3-2 lead as a free kick was guided into the net by Sam Hanger. In injury time, the visitors sealed victory as Tony Kavanagh found the back of the net.

Elsewhere in the Combined Counties League Division One, Frimley Green earned a 1-1 draw against Balham to extend their unbeaten run to four games. The result ended Balham’s four game winning streak in the league, but the side are still fifth in the table and are contending for a place in the top three.

Top of the table Banstead Athletic defeated Staines Lammas 2-1, accumulating a total of sixty three points this season- eight points ahead of second placed Chessington & Hook United. However, Redhill are likely to claim second spot as the Lobsters have only played twenty four games, whereas Chessington & Hook have played twenty nine games and Banstead defeated Staines in their twenty sixth game of the season.

Redhill ended their twelve match winning streak in the league against Frimley Green on Saturday, but the side still remain unbeaten as they drew 2-2. Ashley Snadden’s fourth goal of the season gave the Lobsters a 1-0 lead at half time, Frimley equalising on the hour mark. A wonder goal from Kery Kedze reclaimed the lead, his cross finding the top corner. Redhill, however, were forced to settle for a point as the opposition scored in the 81st minute.

Post match, manager Gavin Gordon stated:

“Overall, we created enough chances to win and on another day it could have been very different; a lack of competitive games over the last three weeks could have been a factor. They worked hard and caught us on two counter attacks, which the players and I are disappointed with.”

To conclude, he commented:

“It’s the beauty of football: any team can get a result on the right day. If you look across the leagues, no team have the perfect record. We have a game on Wednesday (against Epsom Athletic) to try and get back to winning ways. The hunger and determination in the group has led us to sixteen games undefeated- we have self belief in one another to achieve our aim.”

As a result, the Reds have dropped to third place. Chessington & Hook United stole Redhill’s runners-up position with a 3-1 win over fourteenth placed South Park Reserves, but the side have played five more games than Redhill; only two points separate the teams.

Meanwhile, Banstead Athletic remain at the top of the table. The side thrashed Dorking, who are fifteenth in the table, 4-0. Billy Frost claimed a brace, Martin Smith and Taylor Maddox also making their way onto the scoresheet.

Another thrashing of the weekend included AC London‘s 4-0 away victory to Farleigh Rovers. Three points have enabled AC London to climb to seventh place, Farleigh struggling in 16th. One place below the side, Cove also suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to fourth placed Bagshot.

Each team in the top eight emerged victorious on Saturday; Balham defeating ninth placed Worcester Park 4-2; Eversley & California comfortably beating Cobham, who sit in tenth, 2-0; AC London beating Farleigh, as aforementioned; and Sheerwater thrashing bottom of the table Epsom Athletic 5-1.

Twelfth placed Staines Lammas defeated Ash United 2-1. Although two places separate the teams, Ash United are in an eight point deficit to Staines.

combined-counties-league-headerLeague leaders Banstead Athletic were pegged to a 1-1 draw against 3rd placed Chessington & Hook United on Saturday, both teams scoring in injury time. A penalty for Banstead in the 93rd minute almost snatched a last gasp winner, but Ryan Howard equalised for the opposition just one minute later.

A ten goal thriller between Cove and AC London was settled as a 5-5 draw. The former have accumulated ten points this season, sitting in the penultimate position of the table. Conversely, AC London are comfortably seventh in the league, three points adrift of fifth placed Balham.

Nine goals were scored altogether between Ash United and Worcester Park at the weekend, but the Green Army received an 8-1 thrashing by the Park. As a result, the latter have climbed above Cobham and Sheerwater into eight position, level on points with AC London. Meanwhile, Ash United are stuck in an unlucky thirteenth place.

Another thrashing of the weekend include Frimley Green‘s 6-1 victory over Farleigh Rovers. Drew Matthews and James Robertson gave Frimley a 2-1 lead at half time. Both players completed a brace in the second half, Ben Dearlove and Matt Baxter also appearing on the scoresheet. To see our full match report, click here.

Balham defeated Sheerwater 3-2 on Saturday. Eddie Luchford and James Adebayo sealed the victory, both appearing on the scoresheet.

Dorking took a 2-0 victory against Cobham, scoring in the first twenty minutes. James Herouvin took advantage of a mistake by the keeper, smashing the ball into the net from outside the box. Will Hearn added another goal in the 81st minute, connecting with Ryan Lunn’s cross at the far post. This victory puts Dorking in 15th place, five places behind Cobham.

Staines Lammas lost 2-1 to Eversley & California, despite taking a 1-0 lead. The side are currently eleventh in the table, whilst Eversley are sixth.

Another match day  included several postponed fixtures, including AC London vs. Frimley Green, Cove vs. Cobham, Epsom Athletic vs. Balham and South Park Reserves vs. Ash United. Top of the table Banstead and title chasers Redhill did not have a game scheduled on Saturday.

Bagshot thrashed Farleigh Rovers 7-2 in a goal rampage, Jordan Merrriman scoring a hat trick. Ethan Dixon netted a brace, Wes Kendrick and Josh Wood also appearing on the scoresheet. As a result, Bagshot remain fourth in the table, six points behind third placed Chessington & Hook United. At the other end of the league, Farleigh are in sixteenth position. The Foxes have accumulated seventeen points this season, alongside Dorking FC. Goal difference puts the latter in fifteenth, ahead of Farleigh, Cove and Epsom.

Eversley & California hosted  Chessington & Hook United, taking a 2-2 draw. A win for the visitors would have put the side in second place, one position ahead of Gavin Gordon’s Redhill. However, the Lobsters still have four games in hand and are on a winning streak of thirteen games.

Sheerwater defeated Dorking FC 3-1 on Saturday, taking the lead after just two minutes of play. Dorking equalised on the stroke of half time as James Herouvin placed the ball into the far corner. In the second half, Sheerwater reclaimed the lead with fifteen minutes left, adding another goal to polish the victory in the final moments. Subsequently, the side are in eighth place.

Staines Lammas lost 2-1 to Worcester Park, sitting in eleventh position. Their opponents are currently tenth in the table, three points behind fifth placed Balham.
